A Prayer for Trees

Creator God
Out of chaos you brought order.
Out of nothingness you brought life.
In the middle of all life stands the tree.
Trees provide the air that nurtures all your creation.
Birds make them their homes.
Cats climb them for protection.
Trees recycle life that has come before.
Bless the trees of this world, loving God.
Remind us to serve as their caregivers and protectors.
Give them long limbs and long life.
The gift of their breath is as special to us as the
Breath of the Holy Spirit.
---Rev. Dr. Chuck Currie
Dear friends,
This week we said farewell to the 75 year old sugar maple that stood in front of the Cottage. This lovely friend had significant insect damage to the core of the tree visible from the outside. High winds could take down more than just stray branches, so it was time. On May 4, some of the neighbors (pictured above) gathered to say "thank you" to the tree for its many years of generous shade and beauty. People brought prayers and poems which we read aloud. It was a lovely reminder that not only are we connected as neighbors, but that we are also deeply connected to all of life; the plants and animals who share God's earth, and this small patch of it here on Elm Street.
Special thanks to Rod Hossfeld, Jr. Warden and neighbor for organizing the safe and efficient removal this week. Photos below.
We will take some time to evaluate potential new plantings for the Cottage.
Easter blessings,
Nancy+
